Malware in MP3’s

Posted on May 28th, 2008 in PC/Internet Security by admin

A massive new virus campain has been running recently on mp3 download sites that installs a dangerous malware when the user downloads the dodgy mp3 file. In fact it has been reported that over 400,000 computers have been hit by the virus (shows how big the download industry is).

I have to say the best way to not get hit by the dodgy malware is just not to use download or torrent sites! Just pay the dollar and get the song you want, its both safe and legal.

But if you do happen to download from these sites then you should watch out for certain files listed here, they are some of the dodgy ones;

Microsoft WorldWide Telescope

Microsoft officially launched the free online WorldWide Telescope, which allows Internet denizens to pan around and zoom through the night sky.

Developed over the last six years, Microsoft is releasing the application free of charge in part to show off its Visual Experience Engine. The engine provides smooth panning and zooming that allows viewers to focus on a particular planet or cluster of stars without abandoning the scale of the area surrounding it.

“Users can see the X-ray view of the sky, zoom into bright radiation clouds, and then cross-fade into the visible light view and discover the cloud remnants of a supernova explosion from a thousand years ago,” said Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics researcher Roy Gould of the new service.

The website has already caused a stir among technology bloggers.

Some were unimpressed and said similar applications were already available, however Robert Scoble, an American blogger and former Microsoft employee, claimed he shed a tear while watching a demonstration of the WorldWide Telescope earlier this year.

Google Friend Connect

Google on Monday announced a preview release of Google Friend Connect, a way for Web publishers to add social features to sites without programming.

“We’re seeing social capabilities get baked into the infrastructure of the Web,” said David Glazer, director of engineering at Google, at a press conference to launch the service. “[They're] increasingly not tied to any one site, to any one source of friends, or any one type of application. We see the Web moving towards an end state where people can use any apps on any Web sites with any of their friends.”

Shared information will include friends lists, profile data, status and presence details. Since Google is not itself a social networking site (although it does operate Orkut), it seeks to provide a gateway between them and third party sites that wish to use the data.

As Google has so far failed to make any significant inroads with a social networking site of its own, Google Friend Connect mirrors Google’s similar efforts like OpenSocial to position itself as a platform provider with tools that power social networks. While Facebook and MySpace’s efforts focus more on plugging into established social networks, Google Friend Connect has the rest of the Internet in its crosshairs with simple tools that any owner can embed in their site.
