Adjust Visual Effects for Better PC Performance

Posted on October 10th, 2008 in 1, Computer Speed, System Settings by admin

You can increase your computer’s performance by adjusting the visual effects. The visual effects can take up your PC’s CPU and slow it down, often leading to more annoying problems. This tweak should work on all Windows Vista machines.

These options for changing your visual effects are totally optional, you can edit which ones you like and keep the ones you want. But I can assure you that these system settings only change the ‘pretty’ look of your computer and nothing important.

To get started adjusting your visual effects settings just;

  • Open control panel
  • Click system and maintenance
  • Open system
  • In the left pane click advanced system settings
  • Open the advanced tab
  • Under performance click settings
  • Go to the visual effects tab
  • Here uncheck all of these options
    • Animate controls and elements inside windows
    • Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing
    • Enable desktop composition
    • Enable transparent glass
    • Fade or slide menus into view
    • Fade or slide ToolTips into view
    • Fade out menu items after clicking
    • Show preview and filters in folder
    • Show shadows under menus
    • Show shadows under mouse pointer
    • Show thumbnails instead of icons
    • Show translucent selection rectangle
    • Show window contents while dragging
    • Slide open combo boxes
    • Slide taskbar buttons
    • Smooth edges of screen fonts
    • Smooth-scroll list boxes
    • Use a background image for each folder type
    • Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop
    • Use visual styles on windows and buttons
  • Click apply and OK

UK’s New Supercomputer

Posted on January 16th, 2008 in Computer Speed, General Issues, New Tech Products by admin

The largest and most advanced supercomputer in the U.K. has been unveiled in Edinburgh. With the power of 12,000 desktop PCs, the mammoth machine called HECToR is the country’s fastest computer and one of the most powerful in Europe.

The computer’s 60 teraflops (trillion operations per second) have been up and running since autumn 2007, but Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling Tuesday marks the official start by unveiling a plaque at Edinburgh University’s Advanced Computing Facility, BBC reported.

HECToR is four times more powerful than Britain’s previous best computer HPCx, which will continue to run. However, HECToR ranks only 17th in the list of the world’s most powerful computers (as measured against the popular TOP500 list).

The purpose-built machine is housed in 60 wardrobe-sized cabinets in the University of Edinburgh’s advanced computing centre near the Scottish capital. After years of development, Chancellor Alistair Darling is due to attend the official launch ceremony for the 113 million pound machine.

Despite its vast power, it falls short of the world’s fastest computer, Blue Gene/L, which can reach speeds of 478 teraflops.
