Disable Writing to a USB Drive

This is a useful security measure you can set on your computers that will stop all users from writing anything to a USB drive, this could stop people from stealing info from your PC’s.

This tweak requires a pretty simple registry hack;

Open regedit
Navigate here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
Create a new DWORD
Call it WriteProtect
Set the value to 00000001
Reboot your computer
Done

Recover Data from your iPod

Scientific Calculator

To most people the calculator you get in Windows is just that – a plain old calculator.

But what you also get with the calculator is the ability to turn it into a full scientific calculator, I personally never use it but I have heard of some people who use it all the time.

To activate the scientific calculator to do the following;

Open your calculator (start > all programs > accessories > calculator)
Click view
Click scientific
You also have some other options here when you activate the scientific calc

Windows 7 Beta Release

It has been reported on quite a few blogs today that the beta version of Windows 7 will be released as early as next January.

One of Microsofts exec’s hinted that all attendants at the January 2009 MSDN event will be given a dvd with a copy of the beta version of Win7 (although many beta versions seem to be already be circulating) .

The full version of Windows 7 should be released somewhere in late 09 or early 2010, we will keep you posted on new developments about the operating system.

Add a URL Address Bar to Your Taskbar

Here is a cool tweak you can do to your PC so that an address bar will open up in your taskbar (the bar at the bottom of your screen), this means you can type a quick URL in your taskbar and the webpage will open.

Some people may find that it just clutters up their taskbar and is useless, while others may prefer to use it rather than using their browser. This tweak can be done in both Windows XP and Vista;

Right click on your taskbar
Click toolbars
Check address
Done
Type in a URL and the page will open up in your default browser

Get Rid of the Annoying Noise

Do you get sick of hearing that clicking noise everytime you navifate to a new webpage and such? I had an email about this recently and (not that I had ever really been bothered about it) I figured I should do a quick post on how to get rid of it.

Just follow these points and you will turn it off in a second;

Open control panel
Click sound
Click on the sounds tab
Scroll down till you see start navigation and click on it
Go down to the sounds dropdown and select none
Click apply and OK

Backup Your Registry

Do you need to edit your registry but are worried that you may stuff things up and not have a backup. Here is a quick tip for you to do so that you can create a backup of your registry so you can restore your systems registry files if something bad happens (this should work in all windows operating systems).

Go to Start
Open Run
Type in: regedit
Choose File from the toolbar in your reg editor
Select Export
Name the backup (registry_backup_081001.reg – example)
At the bottom of the window you will see the Export Range category. Tick the “All” selection.
Save
Done
